In early May each year, the main piazza of Greve is transformed into a flower and shrub market for the Festa dei Fiori.
The Festa dei Fiori is a commercial market where local people buy shrubs, roses and annuals for their gardens and window boxes. It is also a great moment to visit Greve in Chianti because Piazza Matteotti really is transformed into a thing of beauty. I saw the same phenomenon in Florence where one of the famous piazzas was given over to an identical market rather than being a gigantic parking lot and it made me wish that the Florentines would go to much greater trouble to plant flower beds in their piazzas. It really does make all the difference.
In any case, if you’re in Chianti, especially if you’re motoring along the Via Chiantigiana early in May, be sure to stop in Greve and see how an Italian piazza could be with a bit of effort.
